In early July, as many as 27 cases of West Nile virus were reported within Maricopa County lines. As a result of poor standing water management, West Nile-diseased mosquitoes are on the rise.
In an interview with Arizona ABC 15, Dr. Rebecca Sunenshine, Medical Director of Disease Control suggests that, “if I had to remind people to do one thing, it would be, defend and drain. Wear insect repellent and drain the water where mosquitoes can breed around your home,” to decrease the chances of breeding grounds.
Why you should care
Drywells, catch basins, and other drainage systems work the hardest during the monsoon months to properly dispel of stormwater. However, throughout the year these systems can become filled with debris and become the cause of poor drainage performance. When this happens, properties become the perfect breeding ground for Mosquitoes.
It’s never too late to prepare for Monsoon Season and to avoid health and property damages—not to include potential fines from Arizona’s required 36-hour removal of standing water policy.
